Think of what stands out about being an American when you are abroad. The things that become very apparent as you go to other countries. That would probably help you avoid cliches as unfortunately many Americans have not had the experience or benefit of going abroad. It is easier to appreciate something when you don't have it, so think of those instances. Usually, academic essays should follow a specific formula, include a thesis, and prove something.<BR/><BR/>There are also personal essays, which are just a piece of writing based on personal experience or feeling.
