I've been on a reading kick and need some new material

I'm not really sure where to ask for book recommendations. My mom, aunt and Grandma all read voraciously, but lately, I've been reading more than any of them. So, I need some book recommendations. Have you read anything fantastic lately? Or ever? I don't mind if it is child, teen or adult fiction or non fiction, I just want a page turner! I'm not much of a suspense, thriller or mystery type of reader. I prefer books where a character goes through hardships and understands the world a little better afterward.

Comments welcome!

Here are a few of my favorite books so you get an idea of what I like-

Beach Music
Thousand Splendid Suns
Harry Potter
Fortune's Rocks
The Giver
Memoirs of a Geisha
Gap Creek
Sarah's Key
Diary of Ann Frank

So, any help?

  1. Have you read The Kite Runner? Its the same author as A Thousand Splendid Suns. I enjoyed both of these book. Also I really enjoyed a book called Escape by Carolyn Jessop it is about a polygamist girl that is trying to get out of the community. I think most of her story is true. Also I really liked the Host by Stephanie Meyers, however it took me like 10 chapters to actually get into it so I'd try the other two first. Hope this helps!

  2. I didn't like the Kite Runner... but it does fit in with some of the types of books you like. It is certainly serious. I just read Winter Dance (it might be one word). It is about a guy who decides to run a dog team in Alaska for this really crazy dog annual sled race. It is funny! Have you ever heard of Good Reads? It is like an online book club. :)

  3. Yes! I LOVE the Kite Runner, one of my favorite books, I should have added it. Erin, funny you should mention Escape, I just finished that yesterday.

Thanks Allie for the Winter Dance idea, I'll pick it up. I think I'll also try The Host, I did love Twilight.

    Anything else? Thank you!

  4. ...I thought of another one I really liked... Three Cups of Tea... :)

  5. What about Eat Love Pray? I enjoyed it. You should check it out.

  6. How about "The Hiding Place"? (since you like the Diary of Anne Frank)

Historical fiction--"The Pillars of the Earth" and "World Without End" are fun to sink your teeth into. I personally would skip the hideous rape scenes and other violent parts--reeeaally gratuitous and unnecessary, imho. I'm enjoying "Katherine" by Phillipa Gregory right now. "The Other Boleyn Girl" often reads like a soap opera but it's fun and interesting.

Did you say you've read "The Kitchen God's Wife" and Amy Tan's other older books? I loved those.

Favorite classics of mine--"My Antonia", "Death Comes for the Archbishop" (Willa Cather). And Austen's "Pride and Prejudice", "Persuasion", "Northanger Abbey".

    Reading kicks are the best!

  7. Thank you for the wonderful suggestions! Funny, I just started Eat Love Pray, and am really liking it. Next, after that, is Three Cups of Tea! Thank you Caroline for the ideas, My Antonia is one of my favorites too!
