Saturday hike with the kiddos

Despite Juliet's less than happy behavior we decided to start our hiking season off this Saturday. Juliet was SO CRANKY, but the rest of us were so happy it really didn't put a damper on things.

This kid is the best hiker you've ever met. He's fast, and fearless and never complains, not once. Unless it's time to turn around and then you'll hear him saying "I don't want to go, I want to sleep here!"
We took a short steep hike up Stairs Gulch to this raging river. It was fantastic. We threw rocks and enjoyed all the mountains have to offer.
It was raging and just stunning. Crystal clear water that was as cold as ice. We were the only ones (we never even saw anybody on the trail) so it felt like our own private paradise.
Somebody cheered up after she was out of the darn hiking pack James also hated it at this age. (Click on that link, you won't be sorry.)
Very serious about collecting small rocks and dropping them into the river.
His favorite activity in the entire world is splashing rocks in the river. Never grows old.
iPhone cameras rock, by the way.
Stunning.
Happy as long as she's getting what she wants (freedom!).
Happy hiking 2013!

  1. Looks like a great way to spend the day! Do you ever worry about wildlife? We have stopped hiking as often as there are so many bears and cougars around our area right now. As you said above, we are often then only ones around but the threat of meeting something scary along the way has really deterred my family from hiking the woods lately. I miss it but an too nervous.

  2. Jen, that is so sad! I am so sorry. We don't really have many bears in our mountains (some, but very few) and cougars are rare too. I've hiked my entire life and played in the mountains and never seen either. More dangerous is startling a moose (happened to us many times) or coming across a rattle snake, which is common, but again, I've never seen one in all my years on the trails.

  3. Love this post! I hope Juliet feels better! James telling you that he wants to sleep there (where you turn around) is awesome and hilarious! Have a great week!
