View on America

A job I desperately want has asked me to write an essay on my view of America. I am stumped. First of all, I have a lot to say on my view of America, but when looking for a job, it is best to keep things non political. I have never been more proud to be an American than I am now, only sixty years ago, in some Southern States, African Americans were not allowed to vote. Today, our next American president is African American. But, again, I want to keep it very non political.

And another problem, I haven't written an essay for at least ten years. I don't even remember what an essay is! I remember learning that in an essay you are suppose to "prove" something with a thesis statement, I think.

So I'm at a road block. How do I prove something that is non political? I can write about how proud I am to be an American, but I don't think I'll secure the job that way.

Thoughts? Help!

  1. Oooh, tough. Perhaps something about liberty? Freedoms of speech? Freedom of... consumer power?

I think you can speak about being proud of our country's commitments to equality/ liberty without being overtly political.

It sounds like this essay is just a method to weed out people who jump to clichés right away. I'm interested to hear what you write!

  2. There are two types of essays. Usually, academic essays should follow a specific formula, include a thesis, and prove something.

There are also personal essays, which are just a piece of writing based on personal experience or feeling. I think your job probably wants a personal essay so I wouldn't get too caught up trying to prove something.

You might approach it from your travel viewpoint. Think of what stands out about being an American when you are abroad. The things that become very apparent as you go to other countries. That would probably help you avoid cliches as unfortunately many Americans have not had the experience or benefit of going abroad. It is easier to appreciate something when you don't have it, so think of those instances. Just a thought from an American in London. xx

  4. Thank you Colette, Chelsea and Penny! You are all the best! I think I have an okay essay, but I've never fancied myself a writer. :) I hope I get the job!
